Shaun Mahoney ’97 was appointed Franklin College’s head men’s soccer coach in March, 2006.
Mahoney enters his 11th season at the Grizzly helm after guiding the FC program to its most successful season ever in the fall season of 2010. Franklin posted an 8-5-5 overall record and finished in third place at 5-1-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, earning a league tournament berth for the first time since 2000.
Mahoney guided the Grizzlies to postseason play in 2014 with a third-place finish in the HCAC. The team posted a 5-2-2 league record that included a shutout victory over co-champion Transylvania University. Franklin also defeated its first nationally ranked opponent in school history with a 1-0 home triumph over No. 23-ranked DePauw University. The team battled regionally ranked Wabash College to a scoreless draw. Austin Fundenberger was named the HCAC's Offensive Most Valuable Player and was an All-Great Lakes Region choice by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Fundenberger joined Thaddeus Broderick and Cody Chapman in earning All-Great Lakes Region All-Academic honors by the NSCAA in 2014.
Fundenberger graduated in 2016 as the program's all-time leader for career goals, assists, and points.
The Grizzlies men’s soccer team also earned the 2010 NSCAA Team Academic Award. To qualify, a team must have an aggregate grade point average of 3.0 or higher. FC was one of 194 college men’s programs among all NCAA divisions and NAIA schools to qualify for the honor in 2010. Moreover, the Grizzlies were the lone Heartland Conference men’s team to earn the award.
Franklin also qualified for the HCAC tournament in 2012, marking the second time in a three-year span the team earned one of four qualifying spots in the league's tournament to determine the HCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Mahoney holds a Primer Diploma from the NSCAA.
