Women's Lacrosse Rallies for First Win of Krause Era

During her team's pregame walk-through, Franklin women's lacrosse coach Morgan Krause didn't like how things looked. So she and the Grizzlies talked things over — and it's safe to say they got it figured out.

Led by a nine-goal performance from Addie Whitman, the Grizzlies rallied from three goals down in the second half for a 14-11 triumph over Aquinas College at Faught Stadium.

It was the first career win for Krause, who took over the team on short notice this winter.

"This program hasn't seen a win like this in a hot minute," Krause said. "I'm just so proud of this team and how much they have grown, and I'm super excited for the rest of the season."

Following a 5-5 first quarter, the Grizzlies gave up three straight goals and still trailed by that amount, 11-8, with 6:54 left in the third period. But the rest of the night was all Franklin.

Whitman's seventh goal of the game at the 5:03 mark got the ball rolling, and the home team added two more — unassisted tallies by Abby Moore and Whitman — in a 27-second span to send things into the fourth all tied up at 11-11.

Moore assisted Claire Ecenbarger's go-ahead goal just 32 seconds into the final period, then scored herself 17 seconds later off a Whitman assist.

Whitman added an insurance goal with 9:24 left off of Moore's seventh assist of the night.

"She played absolutely phenomenal," Krause said of Whitman.

Kiera McCord matched Moore's two goals and added two assists for the Grizzlies, while Ecenbarger scored once and assisted on a pair. Moore scooped 10 ground balls, while Maddie Cary collected eight and caused eight Aquinas turnovers.

Goaltender Sophie Taylor came in off the bench after the first quarter and stopped nine of the 15 shots she saw, including the last five.

The Grizzlies (1-2) are back on the Faught Stadium turf Wednesday evening (6 p.m.) against Hamline.
