ANDERSON, Ind. – The Franklin women's lacrosse team faced a stiff test on Wednesday (Apr. 19) afternoon in the form of the Anderson Ravens in a pivotal Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) showdown.
The Grizzlies (6-4, 3-0 HCLC) fended off a late game rally from the Ravens (2-8, 2-2 HCLC) to win 15-14, earning their fourth straight victory to remain unbeaten in conference play and lock down the number two seed in the HCLC Tournament.
How it Happened
Lora Adkins got the Grizzlies on the board first with a goal 3:40 into the game but the Ravens claimed the lead with two goals 1:19 apart to take a 2-1 lead with 8:34 to go in the first. That score held until the final minute of the opening period when
Jillian Schlieper potted a goal to tie things up just ahead of the first quarter horn.
Two straight goals from
Baleigh Riddle opened the second quarter but the Ravens answered with a pair of their own goals to tie the game at 4-4 with 8:06 to go in the first half. The Grizzlies closed out the opening half strong, out-scoring Anderson 3-1 over the final eight minutes with a goal from Adkins with six second left in the half sending Franklin into the break with a 7-5 edge.
Franklin opened up their lead with five straight goals over the first 5:21 of the second half and a late third quarter goal from
Victoria Simmons made it 13-8 Franklin with a quarter to go. The Ravens would charge back to get within a goal with four minutes to play, but Riddle would score the dagger with 3:31 to play and a last-second Anderson goal would prove meaningless.
