MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Franklin men's tennis team grabbed a win in thrilling fashion on Thursday (Mar. 23) evening, taking a 5-4 decision over the Maryville Scots.
Franklin (4-8) shook off a deficit through doubles play to earn the win, taking four of the six singles showdowns including a pair of singles wins in a deciding set to take down the Scots (4-8).
The Grizzlies grabbed their first point of the afternoon with
Dustin Garrison and
Layton Stieneker teaming up to take an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles to even the score. It was the lone point of team play the Griz came away with, as the Scots won two tight contests to take the lead into singles play.
Stieneker got the Grizzlies even with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles as the first match to finish. Garrison collected his second point of the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles play to tie the match at 3-3 and set up a dramatic finish that saw the final three singles showdowns going the distance.
Ezra Schwier put Franklin up 4-3 with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 win at the four-spot in the order but a three-set win for the Scots at the five-spot got the game back to even.
The match came down to the showdown at the No. 1 singles spot and
Nathan Jarboe claimed the team win with a gutty performance. Jarboe dropped the first set 6-4 but battled back to win the second set in a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-4). In the final set of the night, he out-dueled Sam Cocchia 10-7 to give Franklin the win.
Franklin returns to action on Apr. 1, when they take on the Transylvania Pioneers on the road at 11:00 a.m.
