Franklin Picked to Finish Seventh in League's Preseason Volleyball Poll

GREENWOOD, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team has been picked by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) coaches to finish seventh overall in 2017, according to the preseason poll released on Friday afternoon.

Head coach Mary Johnston and the Griz finished 15-12 in 2016, going 4-5 in HCAC play to finish sixth overall and just miss out on a conference tournament berth. Franklin received 46 points in the rankings.

The Grizzlies bring back an experienced squad from a year ago, returning six of the team's seven starters including First Team All-HCAC selection Amanda Lelivelt and HCAC All-Freshman team choice Kennedy Surface.

For the second consecutive year, Hanover College was chosen as the league's preseason favorites after garnering 98 points and eight of the 10 first-place votes. Bluffton grabbed the other two first place votes, earning 85 points and the number two spot in the rankings.

Transylvania (73 pts), Rose-Hulman (65 pts), Defiance (63 pts) and Manchester (59 pts) fall in line above the Griz in the rankings. Anderson (27 pts), Mt. St. Joseph (21 pts) and Earlham (13 pts) round out the rankings.

Franklin opens the 2017 season on Friday, Sept. 1, when they head to Waltham, Mass. To battle Wellesley in the opening game of the Brandeis Invitational. First serve is set for 8:00 p.m.
