FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin women's tennis team opened up Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play this weekend, with a pair of matches against Defiance College and Mount St. Joseph University over a 24-hour span.
The Grizzlies (3-0, 2-0 HCAC) passed both challenges with flying colors, downing Defiance on Friday (Sept. 14) night, 9-0. On Saturday (Sept. 15) morning in Cincinnati, the Grizzlies made quick work of the Lions, picking up an 8-1 run to go to 2-0 in conference dual matches.
Franklin 9 – Defiance 0
Making their debut as the Grizzlies' top doubles tandem, Karen Dringenburg and Maddie Bright earned a hard-fought 9-8 (7-3) win for the first point of the night. Franklin's No. 2 team of Alexa Schofner and Holyn Eldridge were 8-2 winners, while Grace Otte and Brianna Hutton were 8-3 winners in the final doubles match.
All six singles matches went to the Grizzlies in straight sets, opening with a 6-3, 7-6 (8-7) win by Dringenburg in the top singles spot. Eldridge was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at the No. 2 spot while Schofner collected a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. Maddie Bright was a 6-3, 6-1 winner in her first match as the No. 4 singles player while Grace Otte and Madison Pifer allowed just one point between them in wins at the final two singles spots.
Franklin 8 – Mount St. Joseph 1
The Grizzlies stayed perfect in singles play in 2018, sweeping the first three points of the match. Dringenburg and Bright were 8-2 winner as the top doubles team, a score matched by Eldridge and Schofner at the No. 2 position. Otte and Brianna Hutton closed out tandem play with an 8-0 win from the third position.
Dringenburg led off singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win from the top spot, a score matched by Otte from the No. 4 singles position, securing the win. Schofner walked away with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the second position while Bright was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at the third spot. Emily Seger rounded out the FC lineup and 6-4, 6-2 winner at the No. 6 position in her first singles action of the year.
The Grizzlies return to action on Sunday, Sept. 23, when they head to North Manchester, Ind. for an HCAC showdown with the Manchester Spartans. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
