OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The Franklin College women's tennis team opened the fall season in impressive fashion on Friday (Aug. 31) night, rolling to a 7-2 win over Oakland City University.
The Grizzlies (1-0) swept through doubles play to take a commanding lead over the Mighty Oaks (0-1) that they wouldn't let go of. Franklin's top doubles tandem of Karen Dringenburg and Alexa Schofner got things started with an 8-0 victory from the top spot. They were followed by an 8-5 win from the freshman duo of Grace Otte and Maddie Pifer at No. 2 doubles, and an 8-3 win from the No. 3 team of Gabbi Mahurin and Emily Seger.
Singles play saw Dringenburg roll to a 6-2, 6-1 win from the top spot. Schofner would also pick up her second point of the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win, closing out the team victory in her first career match at the No. 2 position.
Otte rallied from a set down for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 win at the third spot, while Tapanga Gauck held on for a 6-1, 1-6, 11-9 win at the No. 6 position to round out the scoring for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies now turn their attention to their annual doubles tournament, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday at Mickel-Hoover Tennis Courts in Franklin. First serve on Saturday is set for 10:00 a.m.
