FRANKLIN – The opening weekend was a successful one for the Franklin College women's tennis team, as the Griz defended their home courts at the Mickel-Hoover Complex on Saturday and Sunday.
The Grizzlies welcomes Midway and Manchester to town for a doubles tournament on Saturday morning, going 5-1 against the Eagles and 4-2 against Manchester. The Griz hosted their first dual match of the year on Sunday afternoon, battling back to defeat Cornell College, 5-4.
After going 3-0 as a tandem on Saturday, Rachel Rose and Karen Dringenburg made it a perfect weekend as a tandem with an 8-5 win over Cornell's Julia Thome and Gabriella Ferro at the No. 1 doubles spot. But the Rams responded with a pair of 8-3 wins in the other two doubles matches to take a lead into singles play.
But singles play is where the Griz would rally, taking four of the six matches to seal the win. Holyn Eldridge was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles while Rose wrapped up a perfect weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Raquel Ruiz at the No. 3 spot.
Freshman Lilly Bushong picked up a straight set win in the No. 6 singles spot, downing Janice Elkerton 6-2, 6-2 to even up the match. It all came down to the battle at the fifth spot between Megan Battles and Katie Mintle and after a marathon 7-6 (7-3) first set, Battles put the finishing touches on the win with a 6-4 triumph in the second set.
The Grizzlies will look to keep their hot start going this coming Tuesday, when they head to Kokomo, Ind. For a dual match with Indiana-Kokomo. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m.
