TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Franklin College swimming and diving teams opened up their final weekend of regular season competition on Friday (Jan. 26) night with a showdown against HCAC foe Rose-Hulman in their final road dual match of the year.
The Franklin women moved to a perfect 9-0 in dual competition, winning 11 of the 12 events to cruise past the Engineers 154.5-61.5. The Grizzly men would put up a tough fight against the top team in the league before falling to Rose-Hulman, 147-77.
The night opened with a dominant performance by the women's 200 medley relay team. The quartet of Jessica Halsmer, Ashley Snoke, Jacqueline Richard and Karlee Demsey grabbed first place with a time of 1:53.10, winning the event by more than three seconds. Later in the night, the team of Brynna Sentel, August Hartzell, Amy McCormick and Courtnee Coffman claimed an eight second win in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:45.47.
Six different Franklin individuals claimed event titles on Friday night. Sentel, the reigning HCAC Swimmer of the Week, claimed a pair of wins by taking the top spot in both the 200 IM (2:12.74) and the 500 freestyle (5:13.49). Fellow freshman Richard claimed the top spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.06.
McCormick edged out teammate Halsmer for the top spot in the 200 free with a time of 2:10.60, winning by .17 seconds. Demsey just beat out teammates Richard and Snoke for a win in the 50 free, clocking in with a time of 25.75. Coffman added a win in the 100 backstroke (1:03.82) while Cady Mehringer topped the field in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.73).
On the board, freshman Lexi Blackburn tied for first place on the 1-meter board (263.70) while coasting to the top spot on the 3-meter board (257.50).
Sophomore Jacob Keener claimed a pair of wins for the Franklin men on the diving board. The Greenfield, Ind.-native rolled to a win on the 1-meter board with a score of 286.60 before racking up 263.60 points on the 3-meter board, winning by 15 points.
Freshman Noah Tallman claimed the only other event title for the men, winning the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.51. Several Grizzlies secured runner-up finishes on the night, including James Hone in the 200 free (1:47.15), Sam Hall in the 100 backstroke (54.42) and Jack Heim in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.20).
Both Franklin relay teams also picked up points with runner-up finishes. The 200 medley relay team of Zachery Rayce, Heim, Tallman and Ben Doss clocked in with a time of 1:39.44 while the 400 freestyle relay squad of Doss, Jordan Cermak, Hall and Hone finished with a time of 3:16.30.
Both Grizzly teams will wrap up dual competition on Saturday (Jan. 27) afternoon, when they welcome Illinois Wesleyan to Franklin Middle School for Senior Day. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
