RECAP | Grizzlies Take Top Spot at Derby City Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Franklin women's swimming & diving team opened their season on Saturday afternoon at the University of Louisville with a monumental win in an early season contest between NCAA Division II, Division III, and NAIA opponents at the Derby City Invitational.

The Grizzlies swam stroke for stroke against tough competition from McKendree University, Maryville University, Bellarmine University, Centre College, Rhodes College, and Asbury University. At the end of the day, the Grizzlies accumulated 502.5 points, winning the event by 56.5 points over second place McKendree.

Bellarmine University jumped out to an early lead by winning the opening medley relay followed closely by the Franklin team of Brynna Sentel, Ashley Snoke, Karlee Demsey, and Courtnee Coffman. The lead did not last long for Bellarmine though when Franklin took control of the scoring in the second event of the afternoon.  From there, it was all Grizzlies as the team's depth controlled the meet the rest of the way.

August Hartzell led the way for the Grizzlies racking up 47 points behind her second place overall finish in the 200 breaststroke.  The swim was just two seconds off the all-time Franklin team record.  Amy McCormick, Sentel, and Snoke each followed closely behind Hartzell in the scoring column adding 45 points, 43 points, and 42 points respectively.

Bri Gunning added significant points in the diving competition where she finished 7th on the 1-meter board and fourth on 3-meter.  Freshman Lexi Blackburn also contributed to the win by finishing in third place on the 1-meter board and breaking the all-time Franklin College record for six dives with 220.85 points.
