ALMA, Mich. – Backed by a strong defensive effort and some late-game heroics, the Franklin women's soccer team got back in the win column with a 2-1 win over Alma College on Saturday (Sept. 22) afternoon.
Franklin (3-4-1) limited the Scots (2-6) to just two shots on goal and senior Rachel Hawkins buried the game-winning goal in the final minute to snap a two-match slide. For Hawkins, it was her first goal of the year and her first game-winning tally since the 2015 season.
A familiar face got the Grizzlies on the board in the 16th minute, as senior Maddie Fleet took a loose ball and stuck a shot into the back of the net, giving her six goals on the year and 14 total points.
The lead would stand until the 39th minute, when Ashley Oldham brought the hosts even with her first tally of the year. Shots were 8-6 in favor of the Grizzlies in the opening half and the teams headed into the locker room even at 1-1.
The second half saw the Scots pressure the Franklin back line, with the hosts out-shooting the Grizzlies 10-2 over the final 45 minutes. But none of those shots found their way on target and with 56 seconds left on the clock, Hawkins put the Grizzlies in front for good, burying Franklin's lone shot on goal in the second half to seal the win.
Shot attempts were 16-10 in Alma's favor, with Fleet leading all Franklin players with four shots. In goal, Lexi Short needed to make just one save to move her record to 3-4-1 on the year.
Franklin closes out non-conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 26, when they welcome No. 17-ranked Centre College to town. Kick-off from Faught Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
