DANVILLE, Ky. – Playing their first road contest of the year on Wednesday night, the Franklin women's soccer team looked to make it two wins in a row when they took on Centre College at Amend Field.
But the field was tilted in favor of the hosts for the majority of the game as Centre peppered the Grizzlies' defense for 31 shots on the night. Lexi Short was brilliant once again in goal, turning aside 10 shots but it wasn't enough as the Colonels marched to a 2-0 win.
The teams traded chances in the early going with Clare Lenart and Hannah McIntosh generating a shot on goal each in the opening 20 minutes that was turned away by Centre goalkeeper Sarah Youkilis. At the other end of the field, Short was razor sharp, making a pair of key stops in the 28th and 32nd minutes. After 45 minutes of play, the teams remained scoreless.
Disaster struck in the 51st minute for the Grizzlies as an own goal proved to be the ice-breaker for the Colonels. Franklin couldn't get the offense going the rest of the way, generating just two shots on goal the rest of the night, the last coming on a Maddie Fleet shot that was turned aside by Youkilis with nine minutes left in the match.
Fleet finished with a team-high four shot attempts, putting two on target. Lenart and McIntosh were the only other Grizzlies to finish with a shot on goal as Youkilis needed just four saves to earn the clean sheet.
Franklin will have four days to rest and recover before their next match, which comes on Sunday (Sept. 10) at Illinois Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. eastern time.
