Recap | Comets Spoil Grizzlies' Season Opener on Friday Night

Final: Franklin 1 – Olivet 2
Records: Franklin 0-1 | Olivet 1-0
Location: Faught Stadium – Franklin, Ind.

FRANKLIN – On a chilly, wet night at Faught Stadium, the Franklin College women's soccer team opened up the 2017 season with a showdown against the Comets of Olivet College.

Franklin opened the scoring early in the game, but the high-powered Griz attack was bottled up the rest of the way. That gave the Comets a chance to pounce and score two goals within a 13-minute span of game time to complete the 2-1 comeback win.

The Comets offense got to work right away, generating three shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes. Franklin goalkeeper Lexi Short was sharp early on, turning away each opportunity to keep it scoreless early.

In the 12th minute, a familiar face netted the Grizzlies' first goal of the year when Maddie Fleet headed in a corner kick from Jillian Lawrence for the first tally of the contest.

Short came up with a sensational diving save on a deflected ball in the 37th minute to keep the Grizzlies in front, but it would be short-lived as Olivet's Abigail Radcliffe lofted a shot over the outstretched arms of Short in the 41st minute to bring the game back to even.

Olivet grabbed the lead in the 53rd when last year's leading goal scorer Isabelle Leon potted a shot in the box past Short to make it a 2-1 game. Despite holding a 10-1 advantage in shots in the second half, the Griz struggled to generate top notch chances in the second half. Franklin had a look late in the game when Abby Stayer lined up for a free kick right outside the box, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.

Shots were 18-13 in favor of the Grizzlies with Fleet's eight attempts leading all players. Short finished with seven saves for the Griz while Brooklyn Holley turned aside eight shots at the other end for Olivet.

Franklin will have a chance to get in the win column for the first time in 2017 on Sunday afternoon when they take on Thomas More College. Kickoff from Faught Stadium is set for 5:00 p.m.
