Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's soccer team recorded its 11th shutout of the season in advancing to the 2016 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) tournament championship match behind a 2-0 win against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Tuesday from Faught Stadium.
The Grizzlies host Hanover College in the HCAC's tournament championship match on Saturday, November 5 at 1 p.m.
Franklin (16-3), the tournament's No. 1 seed, grabbed an early lead on a goal by freshman Taylor McDaniel just 38 seconds into the contest. Junior Clare Lenart played a long ball to McDaniel from the midfield. The freshman successfully put away the goal against the Rose-Hulman goalkeeper. McDaniel scored the lone goal in Franklin's regular-season victory on October 26.
The Grizzlies added an insurance goal in the 51st minute when an attempted crossing pass from junior Jillian Lawrence sailed into the upper left corner of the goal.
Franklin held a 16-9 shot advantage in the match, including a 10-3 edge during the first half. Seven of Franklin's 16 shots were on goal. Lenart led the team with five shots, while sophomore Maddie Fleet and McDaniel each attempted three shots. Freshman Jalynn Gorman and Lawrence each had two shots in the victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Lexi Short made six saves to record her 10th shutout of the season.
Franklin's 16 wins match the program's single-season school record set during the 2015 campaign. The Grizzlies have reached the HCAC tournament championship match for three consecutive seasons.
No. 2 seed Hanover reached Saturday's tournament championship match with a 2-1 semifinal victory against No. 3 seed Mount St. Joseph University also on Tuesday.
