Franklin, Ind. - Two first-half goals propelled the Franklin College women's soccer team to the 2016 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) regular-season title and No. 1 seed in next week's postseason tournament with a 2-0 victory Saturday at Anderson University.
Junior Clare Lenart got the visitors on the scoreboard in the 28th minute after receiving a pass from freshman Taylor McDaniel. Ninety seconds later, sophomore Maddie Fleet scored her 25th goal of the season off an assist from Lenart to cap the scoring in the match.
Franklin (15-3, 8-1 HCAC) held a 19-5 shot advantage, including an 8-1 edge during the first half. Junior Haley Lowe and Fleet each attempted four shots, while freshman Jalynn Gorman, Lenart, and McDaniel each added three shots in the victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Lexi Short registered her seventh shutout of the season by making four saves.
Franklin and Hanover College each posted 8-1 HCAC records during the regular season, but the Grizzlies earn the top seed for the postseason tournament with a 2-0 victory between the two teams on October 5 at Faught Stadium.
The Grizzlies will host No. 4 seed Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a tournament's semifinal match on Tuesday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. from Faught Stadium. The championship match will be played on Saturday, November 5 at the highest seed of the remaining two finalists.
