North Manchester, Ind. - Hat tricks by sophomore Maddie Fleet and freshman Taylor McDaniel propelled the Franklin College women's soccer team to a 7-0 victory at Manchester University in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play on Wednesday afternoon.
Franklin (11-2, 4-0 HCAC) increased its winning streak to eight matches. The Grizzlies are receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll and are ranked third in the Great Lakes region.
Fleet's goal in the third minute gave the visitors an early lead. Junior Haley Lowe assisted on the scoring opportunity in front of the goal. Franklin took a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute on Fleet's second goal of the match after receiving a pass from junior Jillian Lawrence.
In the 35th minute, McDaniel found the back of the net on a shot just inside the 18-yard box to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 advantage. Two minutes later, Fleet capped her hat trick with her third tally of the first half. Junior Clare Lenart dribbled down the right end line before finding Fleet in front of the net. Fleet leads all NCAA Division III players with 55 points and 17 assists and ranks fourth nationally with 19 goals on the season.
In the second half, McDaniel gave Franklin a 5-0 lead on a goal assisted by Fleet less than two minutes into the period. She later registered her third goal of the match during the 71st minute from junior Abby Stayer to conclude the team's scoring. McDaniel has scored seven goals on the season, including five goals over the course of the last two matches.
Senior Audra Lane rounded out the goal scorers with her third tally of the season during the 50th minute.
Franklin held a 25-8 shot advantage in the match and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Fourteen of the team's 25 shots were on goal. Lenart led Franklin with six shots, while Fleet followed closely behind with five shots. McDaniel recorded four shots and Lawrence rounded out the attack with three shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Lexi Short made one save in each 45-minute period to record her fifth shutout of the season – third in league play.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, October 15 at 5 p.m. when it hosts Mount St. Joseph University from Faught Stadium. Both teams enter the match with 4-0 HCAC records.
