Franklin, Ind. - Franklin College junior Clare Lenart scored two goals, including the game winner 45 seconds into the second overtime period, to propel the women's soccer team past the University of Mount Union 4-3 on Saturday night from Faught Stadium.
Lenart was on the receiving end of a quick touch from freshman Taylor McDaniel into the middle of the 18-yard box. Sophomore Maddie Fleet raced up the left side to create the scoring chance. Fleet sent a ball to McDaniel who found an open Lenart for the game-winning goal.
Mount Union (2-4) forced the extra playing time with a goal in the 82nd minute by Mallory Wahl. The visitors took a 1-0 lead into halftime following a goal from Abbie Andrews in the 36th minute.
Franklin (5-2) squared the match on a goal from Fleet in the 62nd minute. She leads the team with seven goals on the season.
Mount Union regained the lead, 2-1, seven minutes later on Wahl's first tally of the match. The Grizzlies quickly responded when Fleet passed to Lenart inside the box to tie the contest at 2-2 in the 73rd minute.
Senior Audra Lane successfully converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute to give Franklin its first lead of the night, 3-2. However, Mount Union rallied and squared the match with eight minutes left in regulation.
Franklin held a 28-13 shot advantage and attempted all four shots in the match during the extra time. Fleet led the attack with 11 shots, including six shots on goal. Lenart added five of her seven shots on goal. Junior Haley Lowe attempted four shots in the victory.
Franklin returns to action on Sunday, September 18 at 6 p.m. when it hosts Spalding University from Faught Stadium.
