Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's soccer team scored seven first-half goals to defeat Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College 10-0 in the 2016 home opener on Wednesday from Faught Stadium.
Sophomore Maddie Fleet, the 2015 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Most Valuable Player, tallied a hat trick to lead the first half offensive attack. Overall, she finished with four goals and three assists on eight attempted shots in the match.
Franklin (3-0) got on the scoreboard in the second minute as junior Jillian Lawrence found the back of the net after receiving quick passes from junior Jo List and Fleet. Three minutes later, junior Kelsey Brunsman scored her first goal of the 2016 season on a header from Lawrence.
The Grizzlies took a 3-0 lead in the 17th minute on a goal by junior Haley Lowe for her third goal of the season. Fleet scored her first goal of the match in the 18th minute off a corner kick from Lawrence.
In the 31st minute, senior Audra Lane headed a corner kick from Fleet to give the hosts a 5-0 advantage. Fleet scored in the 37th and 40th minutes to cap her hat trick and the team's first-half scoring output.
In the second half, the hosts scored three times in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Sophomore Emma Myers netted her first goal of the season in the 79th minute. Fleet and Lawrence each added a goal during the second 45-minute period.
Freshman goalkeeper Lexi Short recorded her first collegiate win in her first match at Franklin. She made one save as the defense held the Pomeroys to five shots in the match.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, September 10 at 3:30 p.m. when it battles Buffalo State University from the Misericordia Tournament in Dallas, Pennsylvania. Franklin also faces Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday, September 11 at noon as part of the tournament.
