Decatur, Ill. - The Franklin College women's soccer team opened its 2016 campaign with a 2-0 road victory over Millikin University in non-conference action on Thursday. The Grizzlies won a school record 16 matches last season.
The visitors got on the scoreboard in the 49th minute on the first collegiate goal by freshman Jalynn Gorman. Franklin took a 2-0 lead four minutes later on a goal from junior Haley Lowe. Sophomore Maddie Fleet attempted a shot that deflected off the post towards Lowe. The junior then fired a shot that bounced off the post before finding the back of the net.
The Grizzlies outshot Millikin 22-5 for the match, including a 12-2 edge during the second half. Ten of those 22 shots were on goal. Fleet led the team with eight shots. Sophomore Olivia Fisher and Gorman each tallied three shots, while junior Clare Lenart and Lowe each added two shots in the victory.
Junior goalkeeper Jess Young made three saves in goal in recording the shutout.
Franklin returns to action on Sunday, September 4 at 4 p.m. when it travels to Ohio Wesleyan University.
