RECAP | Last-Second Goal Deals Grizzlies Heart-Breaking Loss to Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Franklin College women's lacrosse team wrapped up a weekend trip to Pennsylvania with a showdown against Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) foe Chatham University on Sunday afternoon.

The Grizzlies (3-6, 3-5 ORLC) battled the Cougars (5-8, 3-5 ORLC) valiantly in the conference showdown, but four Chatham goals to close out the game gave the hosts a 19-18 comeback victory.

Jess Silva recorded her second straight six-goal game, finishing with a team-high 15 shots and 11 shots on goal. Abby Stayer added five goals and Morgan McIntosh netted a hat trick on the afternoon for Franklin.

Stayer got the scoring underway less than a minute into the game. Silva would add a goal on a free position shot and Stayer netted her second of the afternoon to spot the Grizzlies a 3-1 lead after 10 minutes of play. Chatham answered with a 4-1 run, but a Silva goal with 8:16 left in the first half knotted the game at 5-5 and completed the hat trick.

The rest of the first half belonged to the Cougars, as Chatham scored seven of the final 10 goals of the opening half, taking a 12-8 lead into the break.

Franklin came out of the break on fire, getting goals from McIntosh, Silva and a pair from Stayer in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to cut the deficit to 13-12. The Grizzlies would keep the pressure on and after Silva's sixth goal of the game, the Grizzlies held an 18-15 lead with 5:16 to play.

But the Cougars would erase the deficit, tying the game with 3:39 to go. The game-winner came with just five seconds to goal on a free position shot, dealing the Grizzlies a heart-breaking defeat.

Shots were 47-45 in favor of the Cougars with shots on goal 37-34 in Chatham's favor. Courtney Jones (3-4) turned aside a season-high 18 shots in goal for Franklin. Jones led the Grizzlies with six ground balls while McIntosh scooped up five ground balls on the day.

Franklin returns home for their final home game of the year next Saturday (Apr. 21), taking on Westminster (Pa.). Start time at Faught Stadium is set for noon.
