FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin College women's lacrosse team opened the 2018 campaign on Saturday (Mar. 3) afternoon, taking on Albion College on a beautiful day at Faught Stadium.
The Grizzlies (0-1) fell in an early six-goal hole that proved to be too much to overcome as Albion (2-0) came away with a 20-2 win. Franklin got goals from senior Abby Stayer and freshman Haley Ash in defeat.
The Britons opened the game with goals on their first five shots in the opening four minutes of the game. The Grizzlies slowed down the Britons after the fifth goal, but trailed 6-0 after 10 minutes of action.
Ash got the Grizzlies on the board with 18:55 to go in the opening half, converting on a free position shot for her first career collegiate goal to cut the deficit to 6-1. But it was all the offense the Grizzlies could generate in the opening half, as Albion took a 12-1 advantage into the half.
Midway through the second half, Stayer potted her first goal of the year off a free position attempt, bouncing a shot past Albion goalkeeper Jenina Villabroza. But that was all the offense the Grizzlies could generate as the Briton potted eight more goals in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Abbey Voss (0-1) got the start for Franklin and finished with seven saves in the first half. Fellow freshman Courtney Jones made her collegiate debut between the pipes in the second half, stopping seven shots against.
Franklin lost the turnover battle 24-13 and the ground ball battle 38-14. Haley Lowe forced a team-high three turnovers and Stayer led the Grizzlies with four ground balls.
The Grizzlies will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 9, when they hit the road to take on Hanover College in an Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) match. Start time is set for 4:30 p.m.
