FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin women's basketball team returned to the comfort of their home court on Saturday (Feb. 8), taking on the Manchester Spartans in the first of three straight contests inside the Spurlock Center.
The Grizzlies (12-8, 8-6 HCAC) led for all but 2:48 on Saturday, dominating the Spartans (8-13, 5-9 HCAC) early and rolling to an 82-40 win. Twelve different Grizzlies recorded points in the rout with the defense limiting the Spartans to just 25.5% (14-for-55) from the floor to snap a three-game slide.
Franklin laid claim to the lead with a Bayleigh Walker layup at the 7:12 mark of the opening quarter and never looked back, ripping off a 14-0 run over a six-minute stretch. The Grizzlies held Manchester to two field goals in the opening 10 minutes and led 16-9 going into the second quarter.
Manchester opened the second with a basket to cut the deficit to five, but it proved to be the closest the visitors would come the rest of the day as Franklin followed with a 13-2 run to make it 29-13 with 4:49 to go in the half. In total, the Grizzlies went 9-for-18 from the field and out-scored Manchester 23-11 in the period to take a 39-20 lead into the halftime break.
The second half brought more of the same with Franklin starting out the third quarter with a 10-2 run and officially put the game out of reach. The Grizzlies would hold a 27-8 advantage over the Spartans in the third period alone and hold a 66-28 lead going into the fourth quarter. Every member of the roster saw action in the final period, with Franklin taking a game-high 43-point lead with 3:44 to play.
Walker led all scorers with 23 points, going 11-for-16 from the floor while grabbing a game-high four steals. Ashlin Aycock came off the bench to pour in 13 points and hand out a game-high five assists. As a squad, the Grizzlies shot 47.2% (34-for-72) from the floor and held a 49-31 advantage in the rebounding battle. Walker, Aycock, Destinee Cross, Taylee Nibbs and Lindsay Freije tied for the team lead with five rebounds each.
The Grizzlies continue their homestand on Wednesday (Feb. 12) night, when they welcome the Rose-Hulman Engineers to the Spurlock Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
