RECAP | Turnovers Prove Costly in Grizzlies' Loss to Albion on Wednesday

ALBION, Mich. – The Franklin College women's basketball team hit the road on Wednesday (Dec. 19) night, heading north to take on the Britons of Albion College.

Franklin (2-7) shot the ball well against the Britons (9-2), connecting on 53.3 percent (24-for-45) of their field goals and tying a season-high with seven three-pointers. But the Grizzlies were done in by 30 turnovers that turned into 34 Albion points in an 87-63 loss.

The Britons jumped out in front at the start with seven straight points to open the game. But the Grizzlies would get right back into the game with a 10-4 run, pulling within a point when Mallory Cast buried her first three of the night. Britney Ballard closed the opening period with a triple of her own, bringing the Grizzlies within a pair at 17-15 after 10 minutes of play.

Franklin took their first lead of the game 91 seconds into the second quarter thanks to a Lindsey Freije three that made it 30-29 Grizzlies. The second quarter along featured 10 lead changes and three ties, with a late Albion three giving the Britons a 41-39 lead after 20 minutes of action.

The two sides traded buckets to open the second half before an 11-2 Albion run put the Britons up by double figures for the first time in the game. The Grizzlies knocked down 6-of-10 field goals in the third period, but 11 turnovers in the frame proved costly as Albion stretched the lead to 65-51 after three.  The final quarter saw the Britons go 8-for-13 from the field as they continued to build on their lead before the final horn sounded.

Cast came off the bench to lead the Grizzlies with 13 points, knocking down a season-high three three-pointers while logging a team-leading 30 minutes. Destinee Cross and Jessica Nix added nine points each with Nix grabbing a team-high six rebounds and four steals on the night.

Franklin will have some time off for the holiday before heading to Greencastle, Ind. on Dec. 28 for the opening day of the DePauw Invitational. Awaiting the Grizzlies will be the No. 2-ranked team in the country in the Thomas More Saints. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
