Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's basketball team hits the road on Saturday, February 15, facing Earlham College at 1 p.m. in Richmond, Indiana, for the first of three consecutive games to end the 2013-14 regular season.
The Grizzlies have qualified for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) championship tournament (February 25, February 28 through March 1) with a 10-5 league record. Franklin is two wins behind Hanover College for second place and a first-round bye in the tournament.
Overall, Franklin is 12-10 on the season following a 72-54 home court loss to No. 25-ranked Transylvania University on Wednesday. The team is 4-2 in road conference games this season, and will be seeking a season sweep over Earlham, after defeating the Quakers 67-56 inside the Spurlock Center on January 4.
Sophomore Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) leads the team in scoring (11.2 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg). She had a career-high 14 rebounds on Wednesday against Transylvania. Brewer leads the HCAC with 58 blocks.
Freshman Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) is averaging 10.7 points per game and is shooting 43 percent from behind the three-point field goal line this season. Junior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) is nearly averaging double-figures at 9.9 points per outing.
Freshman Mandy Fisher (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville) leads the team in assists (82) and steals (42).
Earlham is in sixth place in the HCAC, one win ahead of Defiance College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for the final spot in the postseason tournament. The Quakers are 11-11 on the season and 7-8 in HCAC play. The team is coming off an 83-49 home triumph over Defiance on Wednesday. Kasin Spay ranks fifth in the league in scoring at 15.6 points per game. Lexi McFarland is tops in the HCAC by making 48.1 percent of her three-point field goal attempts.
