NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Franklin swimming and diving teams began a busy weekend of competition with a pair of Friday (Nov. 8) night dual competitions against Manchester University and Bethel College.
Both teams remained perfect in dual showdowns this year, rolling to a pair of convincing wins each. The Grizzly men downed Manchester 164-16 and bested Bethel 160-39. Meanwhile, the FC women were 135-19 winners over Manchester and a 121-38 victor over the Pilots.
Juniors Courtnee Coffman and Brynna Sentel were multiple event winners for the FC women. Coffman rolled in a pair of sprint events, taking the top spot in both the 50 freestyle (24.56) and the 100 freestyle (53.40). Sentel bested the field in both the 200 IM (2:15.44) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.72).
Freshman Caileigh McCafferty claimed first place in the night's opening individual race, touching the finish line of the 200 freestyle in 2:01.85. She would add a runner-up finish later in the night in the 100 butterfly (1:01.11). Junior August Hartzell was a winner in the 100 butterfly (1:01.03) and added a second place time in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.96). Brooke Haflich was her first collegiate event, besting the field in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:47.54.
On the one-meter board, freshman Faith Jackson set a season-high with a score of 228.40, winning the event by a considerable margin.
One member of the FC men's team was a repeat winner on Friday with that distinction going to senior Jack Heim. Heim started off his night with a win in the 200 IM (2:05.56) and followed it up by squeaking by in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.85).
Six different Grizzlies would also claim first place finishes on the night. Senior James Hone was victorious in the 100 butterfly and fellow senior Zach Rayce topped the field in the 100 backstroke (56.13). Junior Kevin Gast claimed the lone distance event of the night with a time of 5:11.52 in the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Nolan Davis won the 200 freestyle (1:52.98) while freshman Shane O'Sullivan bested the field in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.91.
On the one-meter board, freshman Gauge Creech was the winner in his first collegiate event, racking up 283.05 points to best fellow rookie teammate Collin Barton's 210.90 points.
Finally, the Grizzlies claimed first place in a pair of mixed relay events. Sentel, O'Sullivan, Coffman and Dylan Harker claimed first place in the mixed 200 free relay in 1:43.37. In the final event of the night, Hone, McCafferty, Ben Doss and Jacqueline Richard were winners in the mixed 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:33.94.
Franklin wraps up weekend competition on Saturday (Nov. 9), when they welcome the Hanover Panthers to town for their first home dual competition of the year. The first event of the day is set for 1:00 p.m.
