Softball Splits In Opening Day of HCAC Tournament

ANDERSON, Ind. (May 6, 2017)- The Franklin College softball team defeated Anderson University in their opening game of the HCAC softball tournament before falling to Transylvania University in game two. 

Game 1: Franklin-6, Anerson-4

Behind a 15 hit attack, the Franklin College softball team won the opening round HCAC tournament game over Anderson University 6-4.

Franklin opened the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI double by Grace Paszek and added another run in the second on an Anderson error.

The Ravens were able to tie the game at two in the bottom of the third inning before the Grizzlies struck for three runs in the top of the fourth. An RBI double by Alexis Tarver and another RBI hit from Paszek fueled the rally and give Franklin a 5-2 lead. The Grizzlies added another insurance run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Shelby Mager, making the score 6-2.

Anderson made it interesting late in the game, scoring a run in the sixth and seventh innings. However, the Grizzlies were able to finish strong and come out on top 6-4.

In all, five Franklin hitters collected multiple hits, led by Megan Lalioff with four. Monica Collins finished with three hits and Paszek, Savannah Blevins and Taylor Johnson each recorded two hits.

Bailey Lindamood picked up the win, tossing a complete game while giving up nine hits, three earned runs and recording three strike outs. Lindamood improves her record to 7-5 for the season.

Game 2: Transylvania-4, Franklin-3

In the second game of the afternoon, the Grizzlies took on Transylvania in the winner's bracket game. After surrendering two runs in the top of the first inning, the Grizzlies answered back using the long ball. Blevins and Tarver hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to even the score 2-2.

The Pioneers played long ball as well in the top of the third inning, with a two run home run from Meg Liter, which turned out to be the difference in the game. Franklin was able to trim the deficit to 4-3 on an RBI single from Lalioff in the top of the sixth, but would get no further.

With the loss, the team will play in an elimination game tomorrow against Defiance College. The winner will advance to the championship round against Transylvania, who will have to be defeated twice. First pitch against Defiance is scheduled for 11 AM from Anderson University.
