GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The indoor season rolled on for the Franklin track and field teams on Friday (Feb. 2) night, when the Grizzlies took part in the 2018 Tiger Small College Invitational, hosted by DePauw University.
The Grizzlies captured four event titles in total, taking two wins on the track and two in the field. The Franklin women collected 79 points on their way to a fourth place finish, while the men picked up 38 points and a fifth place finish.
Freshman Morgan Clarke collected the Grizzlies' first win of the day, taking the top spot in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.77 seconds. It was a big day for Clarke, who would add a third place finish in the 60 meter dash (8.48) and a fifth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 4.56m.
Junior Kelsey Bowling paced the field in the 60 meter hurdles, taking the top spot with a time of 10.07 seconds. It was the first of two titles on the night for Bowling, as later the junior would win the long jump with a leap of 4.89 meters. Bowling would add a third place finish in the triple jump with a 10.22 meter jump.
Freshman Hunter Fields collected a pair of top-five finishes. The Morgantown, Ind.-native took second place in the high jump after clearing the 1.48 meter mark. Later on, Fields took fifth in the shot put with a toss of 9.53 meters. Laura Worthington added to the Grizzlies' success in the field, taking third place in the weight throw with a toss of 12.26 meters.
Franklin's 4x200 meter relay team of Bowling, Clarke, Emily Walker and Sarah Miller turned in a strong showing, picking up a second place finish with a time of 1:53.93.
On the men's side, senior Nathan Adams continued to re-write the Franklin record book with another strong showing in the weight throw. For the third time this indoor season, Adams set a new program record in the weight throw, this time with a toss of 16.26 meters. It is also the first event win of the indoor season for the Indianapolis native. Adams would collect a second place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.03 meters.
Sophomore Reed Sauter turned in a strong performance in the 800 meter run, taking second place with a time of 1:59.05. Another distance runner, sophomore Clayton Brumfield, grabbed third place in the mile run with a time of 4:30.63.
Junior Noah Dahquist earned a share of third place in the high jump after clearing the 1.73 meter mark. Fellow junior Nick Coultas earned the Grizzlies some points with a fifth place finish in the shot put, recording a 13.53 meter toss.
The Grizzlies will head back to Greencastle for their next event, which takes place on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the DePauw Invitational. Start time is set for 11:00 a.m.
