ANDERSON, Ind. – The Franklin College men's tennis team put their unbeaten conference record and five-match winning streak on the line on Saturday (Apr. 13) afternoon heading north for a meeting with the Anderson Ravens.
The Grizzlies (7-6, 4-0 HCAC) entered singles play trailing by a point after the Ravens (1-7, 1-2 HCAC) snagged two points in doubles competition. Franklin would rally back to take four points in singles competition, sealing a thrilling 5-4 win with the final point coming in the tie-breaker.
Franklin took the first point of the day when the top doubles team of Blake Amonett and Alexander Pollard rolled to an 8-1 win against their counterparts. But Anderson answered with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots, claiming a 2-1 lead as the teams headed into singles play.
Amonett brought the Grizzlies back to even with a 6-3, 6-0 win from the No. 1 singles spot and was followed by Zach Lester's 6-2, 6-2 win at the sixth position that put Franklin back in front. But the lead would flip-flop once again as Anderson picked up victories at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots, moving the Ravens within a point of victory.
But the Grizzlies would rally to win the final two matches in thrilling fashion and earn the comeback victory. In a meeting of the No. 2 singles player, Jacob Zachary went the distance and kept the Grizzlies alive with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory. With the score tied, it was up to Dean Elrod to win the final point and he did just that, earning a 6-4, 7-8 (8) triumph and a Franklin victory.
The Grizzlies get back on the court on Sunday (Apr. 14) afternoon, taking on Hanover College at the UIndy Tennis Center on the south side of Indianapolis. First serve is set for 2:45 p.m.
