FRANKLIN, IN – The Franklin College men's tennis team walked onto the courts on Tuesday (Apr. 2) to take on Mount St. Joseph in their first home match of the spring and the team's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) opener. The Grizzlies would garner a solid team victory, sweeping MSJ and earning a 9-0 triumph.
Doubles started off well for the Grizzlies as they quickly gained a point from Zach Lester and Jacob Zachary when the duo rolled to an 8-0 win from the No. 2 position. In a meeting of the top doubles teams, Blake Amonett and Ty McCory earned a gritty victory as they edged their Lion counterparts in the tie-breaker to earn an 8-7 (7) victory. The third doubles point was awarded to Franklin by default.
Singles competition saw the Grizzlies close out the win in impressive fashion. McCoy notched his second point of the afternoon, rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 from the third position. Zachary made the win official, picking up the Grizzlies fifth point of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win from the No 2 position.
Dean Elrod came in to provide a solid 6-2, 6-3 win for Franklin from the No. 4 spot, finishing just before Amonett who capped off the sweep with a tough 6-3, 6-3 win in a meeting of the team's top two singles competitors. The other two points came way to Franklin by default.
The Franklin Grizzlies will look to stay perfect in HCAC play on Saturday (Apr. 6), when they hit the road to take on Defiance College. First serve from Ohio is set for 11:00 a.m.
