NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Franklin College men's tennis team served it up for the first time in 2018 on Friday afternoon, taking on in-state NAIA opponent Holy Cross (Ind.).
The Grizzlies picked up a pair of straight-set wins in singles play, but the spring season got off to a tough start with a 7-2 loss, dropping Franklin to 3-2 in dual competition in 2017-18.
The Saints would take all three points in doubles, but Franklin would break through with their first point of the day when freshman Jake Zakery claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ben Beekman at No. 4 singles play. Junior Dean Elrod claimed the Grizzlies' final point of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles action, but the early hole proved to be too much for Franklin to overcome.
The Grizzlies will be in search of their first win of the spring next Saturday (Feb. 10), when they travel to Mount Vernon, Iowa for matchups with Cornell College and St. Ambrose University. Start times are set for 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
