Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's tennis team won its eighth straight match, defeating Mount St. Joseph University 8-1 on Sunday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action at the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
The Grizzlies (9-5, 7-1) finished in second place in the conference standings and earned a first-round bye for next weekend's conference tournament.
The hosts swept all three doubles matches to quickly seize momentum of the match. Senior Ryan Hammer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) teamed with freshman Alex Hammer (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) to lose only one game at No. 1 doubles.
Senior Luke Snyder (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) and sophomore Ethan Caldwell (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) picked up an 8-2 win on the No. 2 doubles court. Senior Robby Woehrle (Avon, Ind./Avon) partnered with freshman Kyle Sauley (Madison, Ind./Madison) to win 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Woehrle did not drop a game in winning at No.5 singles. Sauley also was victorious in straight sets on the No. 6 court.
Alex Hammer picked up a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 3 singles. Caldwell lost only four games at the No. 2 singles position. Snyder rounded out the winners with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles.
Franklin will open the HCAC tournament on Saturday, May 2 against the winner of a first-round contest played on Friday. The championship match will be held on Sunday, May 3. The HCAC tournament will be played at the West Indy Racquet Club.
