GREENWOOD, Ind. – Three members of the Franklin College men's soccer team were recognized among the league's best on Thursday afternoon.
Seniors Mason Krupa and Ben Tierney both closed out their careers with selections to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) honorable mention team. Also earning all-league honors was senior goalkeeper Garrett Belden, who was chosen to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Krupa capped off his playing career with a pair of goals, both game-winners, over 16 matches in 2017. No goal he scored was more thrilling than the one he potted in his final career match. Krupa scored on a penalty kick less than one minute into overtime in the Grizzlies' 2-1 win over Anderson on Oct. 28.
It is the third straight year Krupa is taking home an Honorable Mention All-HCAC selection. A four-year starter for the Grizzlies, the Indianapolis, Ind.-native closes out his career with three goals and two assists in 68 matches played.
Tierney started 13 matches as center back for the Grizzlies in his final season with the program. Another four-year starter for the Grizzlies, Tierney closes out his playing days by earning his first career All-HCAC honor.
The Grizzlies' representative on the HCAC All-Sportsmanship Team, Belden finished with 85 saves and one shutout in 2017, playing 1,139 minutes over 13 matches. The senior goalkeeper finished his career with a .725 save percentage, three shutouts and 171 saves over a 34-match playing career.
Transylvania University took home three of the conference's four major awards on Thursday. Riley Calhoon was named Offensive MVP, Tyler Joy-Brandon collected Defensive MVP honors and Matt Vogel was named Coach of the Year. Manchester's Josh Gonzalez was named the league's Freshman of the Year.
