CARMEL, Ind. – Coming off a pair of games in which he led the Grizzlies in scoring, junior forward Payton Mills has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's (HCAC) Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
The Newburgh, Ind.-native shot 71.4% from the field and 80% from the free throw line last week, helping the Grizzlies to huge league wins over Transylvania and Anderson. Those wins extended Franklin's winning streak to six straight and vaulted the Grizzlies into the top spot in the conference with a 5-1 league record.
Against Transylvania on Wednesday (Jan. 8) night, Mills went 8-for-9 from the floor for 18 points in 21 minutes of action as Franklin grinded out an 84-81 win over the Pioneers. Three days later on the road against Anderson, Mills led all players with 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the year as the Grizzlies bested the Ravens, 77-64.
Mills is averaging 11.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game for the Grizzlies, who sit at 9-4 on the season. Franklin looks to keep their winning streak going on Wednesday (Jan. 15) night when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on the Mount St. Joseph Lions. The opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
