Men’s Basketball’s Late Rally Comes Up Short in Home Loss To Defiance

FRANKLIN, Ind. (February 4, 2017)- The Franklin College men's basketball team mounted a furious rally in the final minutes, but came up just short in a 82-79 home loss to Defiance College on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite being down by as many as 22 points in the second half, the Grizzlies were able to mount a comeback to cut the Defiance lead to nine points with 59 seconds left in regulation. Senior guard Aaron Mann knocked down a three point jumper, trimming the lead to six with just 37 seconds remaining. After a pair of Yellow Jacket missed free throws, sophomore guard Blake Oakley knocked down a three ball to make it a one possession game at 76-73. That was as close as the Grizzlies would get, as Defiance was able to make clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Mann led the way for Franklin, turning in a double-double effort with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Oakley contributed 11 points off the bench. Freshman guard Braxton Day scored 14 points and fellow freshman Kale Morris scored 11 points from the bench, including going three-for-four from behind the arc.

Michael Parker was a one-man wrecking crew for the Jackets. Parker poured in 41 points, including seven three-point field goals. He finished 11 for 20 from the field and also snagged six rebounds. Keandre Gilmer turned in a double-double performance, with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

With the loss, the Grizzlies fall to 6-15 overall with a 3-11 mark in HCAC competition. The team will look to respond in Wednesday, when the travel to take on rival and HCAC co-leader Hanover College in the Samaritan's Feet Game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM from Hanover College.
