FRANKLIN, Ind. – A trio of Franklin College baseball players collected All-Mideast Region accolades from D3Baseball.com on Monday (May 21) afternoon.
Sophomore Ryan Bixler and senior Frank Podkul claimed first team all-region honors while sophomore Nick Wright picked up second team honors. Additionally, head coach Lance Marshall was chosen as the region's Coach of the Year after guiding the Grizzlies to a 39-5 record in 2018, earning the first all-region coach of the year honor from D3Baseball.
In his debut campaign for the Grizzlies, Bixler batted .369 with 15 home runs, 56 RBI, 63 runs scored, 10 doubles and 31 walks drawn. The Logansport, Ind.-native claimed HCAC Player of the Year honors and was also named the MVP of the 2018 HCAC Tournament. Bixler finished second on the team with a .491 on-base percentage and his .705 slugging percentage was tops among all Franklin regulars.
Podkul closed out his Franklin career with a strong season at the plate, batting .327 with 16 home runs and 57 RBI, both team-highs. The Schererville, Ind.-native also claimed First Team All-HCAC honors and earned a spot on the HCAC All-Tournament team after hitting a pair of home runs in the conference tournament. Podkul carried an on-base percentage of .448 and slugged .685 while scoring 52 times and drawing 30 walks on the year.
Wright ended his sophomore campagn with a .354 batting average, a .440 on-base percentage and a .597 slugging percentage while playing in all 44 games for the Grizzlies. The Bloomington, Ind.-native smacked 10 home runs, drove in 50, scored 38 times and drew 25 walks. Like his aforementioned teammates, Wright was also named First Team All-HCAC and was named to the HCAC All-Tournament team.
