Baseball Wins Game Three to Take Series Over Defiance

FRANKLIN, Ind. (April 9, 2017)- The Franklin College baseball team defeated Defiance College 11-4 to win the HCAC weekend series.

Franklin was able to take the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman designated hitter Alex Mis led off with a single and advanced to second base on a ground out. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Sophomore shortstop Sam Claycamp singled up the middle to drive in Mis. With two outs, freshman first baseman Nick Wright connected for a two run home run, his second of the series and fourth of the season to give the Grizzlies an early 3-0 lead.

Defiance was able to score two runs in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 3-2 before the Franklin offense erupted again in the bottom of the frame. The first three hitters reached base safely. Junior third baseman Frank Podkul started the rally, drawing a leadoff walk. Wright and junior catcher Jackson Freed followed with consecutive singles. Junior right fielder Ryan Erlandson followed with a single, driving in Podkul. Freshman second baseman Brandt Pawley continued the big inning by ripping a one out single through the right side, driving in Wright and Freed. Claycamp delived the big hit, a two out two RBI double down the left field line, driving in Erlandson and Pawley.

The Grizzles were able to add on two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth inning. Pawley added an RBI double in the fifth and Podkul hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth. The 12 runs would be plenty for Franklin starting pitcher Jordan Clark. The sophomore tossed six and one third innings, allowed only three hits and 3 earned runs. Clark fanned six Yellow Jackets on the afternoon. Freshman Eryk Jones worked the final two and two thirds innings and struck out two.

Mis, Claycamp, Wright, Erlandson, and Pawley all finished with multiple hits. Pawley and Claycamp drove in three runs each and Wright drove in two.

With the win, the team improves to 16-8 overall and an 8-3 mark in HCAC action. The Grizzlies hit the road all next week, starting with a Tuesday visit to Rose-Hulman at 6 PM. Next weekend, the team will travel to Cincinnati to take on Mount St. Joseph for a three game series beginning on Friday.
