Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team seeks to secure a berth in next weekend's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) tournament when it hosts Bluffton University in an important three-game series, starting Friday, May 2 at 4 p.m. from John P. McDowell Field. The Grizzlies currently hold the fourth and final qualifying spot heading into the last weekend of regular-season play.
Franklin stands 22-14 on the season and 13-9 in HCAC play. The team holds a one-game edge over Bluffton – showcasing how much is at stake when the two teams square off this weekend.
The Grizzlies are coming off a three-game sweep of Defiance College last weekend. The team recorded at least 15 hits and scored double-digit runs in all three games.
Senior Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Central Catholic) leads Franklin's balanced offensive attack. He is two hits shy of breaking Nick Stoia's 232 career hits record. This season, Windler is batting .384, has hit five home runs and has scored 36 runs. He leads the HCAC with 40 runs batted in (RBI). Windler is tied for the school record with 57 career stolen bases, being successful on 21-of-24 stolen base attempts this spring.
Junior Jameson Brock (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) is batting .374 and has 13 doubles. He has scored 31 runs from the leadoff spot in the batting order. Classmate Mitch Frey (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) is hitting at a .324 clip and has scored 33 runs. He stands second in the HCAC with 37 RBI.
Freshman Cody Shipley (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) has scored 22 runs and is batting .320 on the season. Junior Tyler Ison (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) is the reigning HCAC Hitter of the Week and was named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week. He is tied for the team lead with five home runs.
On the mound, senior Chris Hoopingarner (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) stands 6-4, with a 3.31 earned run average (ERA). Sophomore Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) leads the staff with 60 strikeouts. The left hander has also posted six victories. Junior Seth Powers (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) is 4-4 with a 4.40 ERA.
Bluffton is 20-16 on the season and is 12-10 in HCAC play. Tim Webb leads the team with a .393 batting average and 35 RBI. Christian Vail is hitting at a .360 clip and has scored 31 runs. Ben Roeschley anchors the pitching staff with a 4-1 record and 2.32 ERA.
