Franklin Set to Recognize Eight State, National Athletic Hall of Famers on Saturday

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Franklin College and the Franklin athletic department will recognize several former alumni who have been inducted into Indiana and national athletic halls of fame in a ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 2.

A total of eight former Grizzlies will have their names added to the alumni hall of fame plaque located in the lobby of the Spurlock Center. The ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. with an informal luncheon to follow in the Wells Suite, located on the second floor of the Spurlock Center.

This year's collection of hall of famers will also be recognized between the men's and women's basketball games against Hanover College. Tip-off for the opening contest is set for 1:00 p.m.

This year's list of hall of fame inductees being recognized includes:

Jenny Johnson-Kappes '72 – A former Franklin softball player who was elected to the United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1981. She is also a 1993 Franklin Athletic Hall of Fame selection.

Jane Betts '62 – Betts was named to the New Agenda: Northeast Women's Hall of Fame in 1993 after an accomplished career as a coach and administrator. Betts is also a 2008 Franklin Athletic Hall of Fame inductee.

John Buerger '69 – A four-year starter in baseball and football at Franklin, Buerger was named to the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.

Jim Plummer '61 – A former football player and track star at Franklin, Plummer was named to the Indiana Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2007 after successful stints as a coach in both. He is a 2012 Franklin College Athletic Hall of Fame inductee.

Richard Foster '60 – Foster was inducted into the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002.

Evan "Big Cat" Williams '71 – And eight-time varsity letter-winner at Franklin, Williams was named to the Long Drivers of America Hall of Fame in 2005. A two-time U.S. National Long Drive Champion, Williams is also a member of the Franklin Athletic Hall of Fame, class of 1991.

Kathy Stricker '78 – Named to the Indiana High School Softball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2017. She is a former 11-time letter-winner at Franklin and was inducted into the FC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.

Robert Thomas '73 – Named to the Florida State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017 for his lifetime service to wrestling.
