GREENWOOD, Ind. – For the second consecutive week, three Franklin College student-athletes have been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) players of the week.
Sophomore running back Jacob Earl, sophomore women's soccer goalkeeper Lexi Short and sophomore men's golfer Jackson Williams all collected their first weekly conference awards after three impressive performances last week.
Making his first career start last Saturday against Earlham, Earl finished with 123 yards on just 13 carries with four touchdowns in Franklin's 56-26 win over the Quakers. The speedy back out of Tangier, Ind. also grabbed a pair of passes out of the backfield, totaling 42 yards.
For the year, Earl leads the Grizzlies with has amassed 315 yards on 53 carries and has six touchdowns on the ground while hauling in 10 passes for 119 yards.
Avon, Ind.-native Short captured her first career HCAC Defensive Player of the Week honor after back-stopping the Grizzlies to back-to-back shutouts of Hanover and Bluffton last week. Short was instrumental in helping Franklin end a nine-game losing streak at Hanover, turning aside all three shots she faced in the Grizzlies' 1-0 win over the HCAC pre-season co-favorites.
Saturday against Bluffton, Short denied all three Beaver shots on goal as Franklin cruised to a 7-0 win. Short carries a 0.76 goals against average and a .896 save percentage into play this week.
Williams earned his second career tournament win over the weekend, finishing at the top of a 59-player field at the Mt. St. Joseph Stateline Shootout. The Greenwood, Ind.-native carded a two-round 175 (70-75) before besting Berea's Kevin Kim in a playoff to win medalist honors in Franklin's final event of the fall.
Williams' round one 70 was the lowest round by any player over the weekend as he claimed his first event title since Oct. 2, 2016 at the Wabash Invitational.
